Thurrock: A Visionary Brief in the Thames Gateway

General Public Agency devised and developed this major international programme to promote the area of Thurrock and demonstrate new thinking on culturally-led regeneration. The programme aimed to create a positive identity for the area and celebrate its history and future potential.

The programme that we developed included research to reveal the hidden character of the area, workshops with international artists, architects and environmentalists to develop innovative proposals to guide change in the area, and a PR campaign and website. The ideas that were proposed included innovative approaches to new housing, the use of the river and the greenbelt as well as cultural and temporary programmes.

The project was showcased in a high-profile event at the Tilbury Cruise Terminal in June 2004 with a keynote speech by Tessa Jowell. Feedback from attendees demonstrated that the programme delivered an extremely positive change in perception of the character and breadth of opportunities Thurrock has to offer. We were subsequently commissioned to design the delivery strategy for the proposed long-term cultural and build environment projects in the borough.
